Rides & Rods 2010

Rides & Rods 2010

Rides & Rods 2010 was held on June 13, 2010 at the Centre Hall American Legion and was sponsored by the Americas Guardians MC, PA2A Chapter and the American Legion #779.  This year's event was put on to raise money for The Fisher House Foundation.  The Fisher House program supports America's military in their time of need by providing a "home away from home" that enables veterans' family members to be close to their loved one at the most stressful time, during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.  To learn more about the Fisher House Foundation, be sure to visit their website, http://fisherhouse.org/.

With such a great cause established, Rides & Rods was determined to put on an event that would honor those that have made sacrifices for us.  With that said, there was plenty to do and see!  In addition to a poker run, many other attractions were taking place all over the grounds!

Vendors lined the parking lot and included A.B.A.T.E. of PA, Bestline Powersports Inc., Moosewood Laser Creations, Central PA Street Machines, King's Funnelcakes and Ride Wide Open to name a few.

Stryker            Other attractions such as the Army Stryker brought to us by Charlie Co., 2nd Batalion, 112th Inf (M) was a huge hit as spectators were able to climb inside and get a hands-on experience on this sophisticated piece of machinery.  Centre Hall Fire Company also brought a fire truck for the spectators to see as well.  And Ride Wide Open G Girls were on hand selling bottled water, raffle tickets and providing photo ops.

A car, truck, and motorcycle show brought in vehicles from near and far, ranging from Williamsport to Altoona and Lewistown.  Approx. 40 vehicles and 6 bikes were registered before the day was through.

Despite the threatening and intermittent rain showers, the poker run brought in over 113 riders and almost 50 co-riders!  First-timer Angie Hockenberry was the lucky one as she won the high hand on the poker run and scored $150.  Congratulations Angie!

We also had CMA on hand to offer bike blessings and more.  Many thanks for coming out and providing our event with your blessings!

Bike Games            Bike games also sprawled the grounds drawing a large crowd.  First timer Gene Maylock with his new red Ducati sportbike, named Francesa, took part in the bike games with RWO G Girl Charity, and proved that he can run with the big dogs on the grass too! Way to go Gene!  America's Guardians MC member, Scott "Scooter" Weaver also took part, accompanied by his girlfriend Amanda.  Kudos goes out to Amanda for being a fierce first-timer competitive on the bike games as well!

And last but certainly not least was the generous bands, sound, and DJ personnel that helped to make this day an even bigger success!  Special thanks goes to the bands, Big Daddy Bangers, Shiver, Nite Kast, and G211 for generously donating your amazing talent to us this day.  Unfortunately Mother Nature kept us from hearing G211, but I will be sure to make it out to hear them play real soon!  Thanks also goes to GP Audio for providing the sound, stage, etc. for the bands all day long, you guys/gals did great!  And finally Party Player Entertainment who kept us bopping from 10am and all throughout the day between the band sets.  Be sure to check out RWO Rock It's section for more on the bands!

Finally, many thanks goes to all the supporters, sponsors, vendors, riders, co-riders, show participants, spectators and all those that made donations, as well as the volunteers that helped to make this event a huge success. Approximately $5000 was raised for the Fisher House Foundation and it makes for a great feeling to know that through all the hard work, late nights, and countless hours there will be a family, maybe even more, that will not have to worry about their housing costs while supporting their loved one.  For a complete list of sponsors of this event, visit the Rides & Rods website.

More than a Biker

By   Thu, Jul 01, 2010

More than a Biker

You see them every day. You know them by their emblem emblazoned leather jackets, biker boots, and helmets. You may even have some preconceived notions about them. But take a closer look. Sometimes those leather jackets are emblazoned with words of faith, references to the Son, and the word Christian.

They are Christians who, like you, are on mission. They wear leather and you wear a suit, but both of you stand for the same cause. The Master has called you both, but he has called you to minister to different types of men.

Tex Owens is a man on mission to bikers. Tex is president of the local chapter of the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) in Clemson, South Carolina. He is a gentle man with a big endearing smile. And he doesn’t mind if you kid him for riding his bike to church in 10-degree weather.

He is tough yet he is also just a big teddy bear with a heart of gold. What makes him such an avid witness for the gospel? When asked about the CMA and what the organization does, he gave this answer.

“I am a member of the Christian Motorcyclists Association and have served as president of my local chapter for the last six years,” he explains. “The CMA is a group of bikers who are committed to Christ and has members all over the world.”

“We partner with three international groups: the Jesus Film, the Missionary Ventures, and Open Doors ministry,” quips Tex. “The Jesus Film is shown all over the world, we support missions efforts, and the Open Doors ministry distributes Bibles in countries with limited access.”

If you visit the CMAUSA Web site at www.cmausa.org, you will discover that they have raised more than $34 million for missions in the last 22 years. This past year alone they raised more than $3.7 million. That is impressive.

When asked if the group goes on a lot of rides, Tex said, “No, we are not a riding club, we are a ministry group. We don’t organize our own rides or events, rather we join other groups and minister to them as they meet or ride or whatever,” he explains. “We go to rallies and we participate and we offer services. We may direct traffic, or pick up trash. We use these rallies as opportunities to talk with bikers and meet their needs.”

“For instance, we go to Biker Week at Myrtle Beach each year. There will be eight to 10 from our chapter, a few from chapters here and there, and we will all add up to about 500 CMA bikers who will be there. We will minister to bikers, offering free water, coffee, and spiritual direction to bikers as we have opportunity,” smiles Tex. “We even go to Black Biker Week, and we have opportunities to share our faith.”

For the most part they are welcomed as they offer hope in crisis, and words of hope to those who have little hope.

CMA bikers participate in toy runs and are a major part of the International Motorcycle Show. CMA serves as an ambassador for the show, helping to distribute coupons and surveys. They have been able to talk with folks and share Christ’s love.

The local CMA, where Tex is president, participates in two diaper runs each year supporting the Foothills Pregnancy Center. They ride with the Patriot Guard on occasion, and they are always eager to join other organizations to assist and earn the right to witness.

Across the world there are more than 140,000 members, and the CMAUSA Web site is an impressive display of missions and ministry.

For the last 20 years, Tex has been affiliated with CMA, first in Miami, and now in South Carolina. Over the years he has earned the right to ride with and minister to Hell’s Angels chapters. When those bikers are hurting, CMA is there to offer a word of hope and encouragement. Of course, if the Hell’s Angels are partying CMA finds another area to minister. The truth of the gospel is evident and shows through the lives and the actions of CMA members, and the Hell’s angels can see the difference.

The members of CMA are concerned about the souls of all bikers and help new converts find a Bible believing church where they can be discipled. Their goal is to be Christ-centered and God fearing as they ride for the glory of God.

Anyone can join CMA, as long as they are believers. Perspective members are invited to come try out the chapter for a while before joining. Soon it is evident if they want to join to minister and witness to a lost world.

What an exciting group of bikers. They are bikers with a mission who seek God’s glory while possessing a passion to reach non-Christians.

Many groups of bikers are formed each year in a number of churches across our country, while the CMA continues to grow, reach the lost and share God’s Word across the world.

Go to www.cmausa.org to find a chapter near you.

Grange Fair Car Show & Festival

On May 22, 2010 we traveled to Centre Hall, PA to the Grange Fairgrounds for the Grange Fair Car Show and Festival, formerly known as Grange Fair Wheels of Thunder. This 3-day event actually started on May 21 and continued through May 23 as they hosted a variety of events such as the Interstate Tractor Pull, Truck Pull, Garden Tractor Pulls and a stereo competition, in addition to the main attraction of the Car and Motorcycle show, featuring cars and bikes from every vintage.  The day was just beautiful, the wind was slightly breezy, and the sun was shining, that is until the rain clouds moved in.... However, the rain didn't stop many folks from sticking around and enjoying the rest of the day that had now become a wet one.

Dozens upon dozens of caraholics could be found, as well as motorcycle enthusiasts and a swell of spectators checking out the many things to see.  In addition to the many events taking place throughout this 3-day event, there were a variety of food vendors, a flea market, craft show, carnival rides and of course, CARS.

CH 38: Msg Sean Thomas Memorial Ride

CH 38: Msg Sean Thomas Memorial Ride

On June 5, 2010, under the threat of cloudy skies, Masonic Motorcycle Club CH 38 members led over 100 motorcycles out of the Muncy American Legion Post in Muncy PA, for the 4th Annual Msg Sean M. Thomas Memorial Ride.  As the riders Alexaleft the parking area and rode past Alexa Thomas, Sean's 3 yr. old daughter, the sun broke through the clouds and everyone waved to Alexa as the ride began.  All of the people in attendance fully understood the sacrifice and with Alexa present, the reason for this ride was even more real and personal. More than 150 people as well as the Road Knights M/C, Combat Vets, Blue Knights, Hired Guns, Legion Riders, Knight Crew M/C and Chapters 25 and 32 of the Masonic Motorcycle Club took part in this years event to raise money for an education fund for Sean's daughter Alexa.  Alexa was barely 6 months old when her father, a Hughesville native and member of Lock Haven Lodge, Msg Sean M. Thomas, was killed on March 27, 2007 in a rocket attack in Iraq.

Riverside Campground            This years ride made the first stop at the Riverside Campground and Lounge in Montgomery, PA; a beautiful campground located on the banks of the Susquehanna River.  Owners John "Flash" and Becky Sanguedolce treated everyone to a spectacular luncheon during the stop, served on their huge out door covered deck overlooking the river.  During the stop the ride picked up about 15 additional bikes that brought the total number of bikes to 117, as the ride left Montgomery and headed south.

The second and final stop was Mindy's Tavern, located on Rt. 405 in Montandon, PA.  Mindy's Tavern is next door to Steel Steeds Campground, PA's first "biker" campground and an Official Sponsor of the Msg Sean Thomas Memorial Ride.  Steel Steeds offers campsites, campers, tents and everything you need to just pull in on your bike and camp.

Upon leaving Mindy's Tavern, the ride picked up a couple more bikes that pushed the total to 120 bikes in all. Upon returning to the Muncy American Legion, guests were treated to RMB Sound as well as food prepared by the Sons of the American Legion.  A 50/50 took place as well as a silent auction with items donated by: Shop Vac, Benner & White Construction, Riverside Campground, U.S Wings, Angus Inn, Haywoods, Sgt. Gritt, E. H. Kleckner, Rummings Bluestone, Pittsburgh Steelers, Harley Rendezvous, Bee Cee Hardware and many other items from donors, sponsors and friends.

Ch 38            At the end of the day, $3,700 was raised for the Alexa Thomas Education Fund as well as donations made to other charities that help our wounded troops and the children of soldiers killed in action in Sean's memory.

Masonic M/C CH 38 would like to thank all those who donated, participated, and helped with this years event.  Ch 38 would also like to invite all Masons and their friends to attend next years 5th Anniversary Ride.

Brandon Miles Memorial Ride

Brandon Miles Memorial Ride

On June 20, 2010 there were a gathering of motorcycles roaring into the Bellefonte High School parking lot early on a Sunday morning.  In the midst of all the bikes was a tent filled with nothing but smiles, grace and friendly faces ready to help.  Along the curb on the outskirts of the tent sat many different items such as helmets, boots, battery tenders, head wraps and more that will soon be used as prizes for the 2nd Annual Brandon Miles Memorial Ride.

Hockenberry            The Brandon Miles Memorial Ride started last year on the Sunday after the Bellefonte Cruise, and this year was the same.  It was a great way to enjoy a beautiful ride through Central PA and help raise funds for a worthy cause all at the same time.  This event took place on Father's Day, which set the stage for many to have some Father/Son bonding time just like Matt Hockenberry of Julian did with his son, Hunter.  This was Hunter's first time on a group ride and the smile on his face showed he was ready to ride!

All in all, this event proved to be a successful one. The ride ended at the Milesburg Park with a delicious meal served out to all the riders. There was a great turnout with 64 bikes and 97 total guests.  It took about 15 volunteers to organize and carry out the details but in the end, it was all worth it.  The ride serves as a dual purpose.  First, it honors Brandon Miles by doing one of the things he loved more than anything else; Ride.  Second, it makes a contribution to the Mission Teens Northwest Bible Training Center and this year's ride did just that!  $1,450 was raised and will be donated to the Mission Teens Northwest Bible Training Center in memory of Brandon Miles.  This non-profit organization is dedicated to helping men and women of all ages recover from drug and alcohol addiction.  The Center relies on donations alone for its operations.  Anyone interested in more information regarding this organization can visit their website at http://www.missionteens.com/Home.html.

Miles Memorial Ride            Be sure to mark your calendars for next year, same place and same time for this ride.  The organizers are hoping to make it bigger and better with more prizes, maybe a band, or even an Open House at the 2-3-4 Motorsports Shop.  Who knows what they'll come up with, but whatever, I'm sure it will deliver another day of enjoyment.

After speaking with Doug Miles about this event, he wanted to make sure I include this:  Special thanks to all of the volunteers who made this meaningful event run smoothly again this year, we couldn't have done it without you.

Pictures from the ride can be on the 2-3-4 Motorsports website, Brandon Miles Memorial Ride Photos.

As always, you can also catch more of this ride and many more in the RWO Events Gallery!

Jerod Schreckengast

Hello Ride Wide Open subscribers and readers!  My name is Jerod L. Shreckengast, I am 23 yrs. old and I live in Millheim, PA.  Before I get started, I would first like to thank RWO Magazine for giving me this great opportunity to write this article for you about my 2006 Honda CBR 600RR Sports bike and how it became what it is today.

Growing up as a child and into my teen years I have always had a passion for cars, bikes, art, working hard, and striving to do better in life.  I had purchased my bike from Woodward ATV’s in Lewistown, PA around early to mid January of 2008.  If you know anything about the weather here in Pennsylvania you might think that’s a little crazy considering the weather conditions that time of year.   Being only 20 yrs. old at the time I had bought the bike because of my passion for them, and it was about time for me to start building my credit history.  During those first few winter months, I patiently waited for better weather and couldn’t stopping thinking of ways to make my bike look, sound, and perform better. I was ready to get these ideas going! I went to my brother, Michael Shreckengast, whom also has the same year, make, and model of bike as the one I Original CBRhad just bought, and started sounding off.  Mike had suggested a Fender Eliminator Kit which would eliminate the stock license plate holder and relocate the license plate. This would also eliminate the stock turn signals and then we would need to replace them with flush mount signals, giving the bike a sharper, sleeker, and overall cleaner appearance.  With that suggestion made, I had done just that.  I ordered a fender eliminator kit with smoke signals to best fit the looks of my Silver CBR.  Now, onto the sound of the bike.  For this,  I ordered a Blue Titanium FMF pipe to give the bike the sound I had desired.

Mid summer of 2009, I had decided that I wanted to change the overall appearance of the bike and give it my own custom paint job.  After some serious thought and consideration of what all I was getting myself into, I had taken the first step and stripped the CBR of its protective shell. Not having the proper tools for the job I had purchased various grits of sand paper to remove the original clear coat and a super fine grit to wet sand the new paint.  Sanding every part by hand, and into the shapes molded into the plastics, seemed like it took forever!  My job took me out of town during the week, so I was limited to working on the bike during the weekends only.  After a few weekends went by of nothing but tedious sanding, sanding and more sanding, the clear coat was off and it was time to wipe them down and get them clean.

Black and White CBR                My original plan was to paint the bike flat black with flat white flames on the front fender, front fairing, and gas tank cover.  So I did just that!  I sprayed a few coats of black onto all of the plastics and wet sanded between coats.  Using the same process with the white after taping on and off the flames I was almost finished, at least I had thought so before some final touches.  Sunday had come around and it was time to go back out of town for my job and this time we traveled to Altoona, PA.  One day after work, the guys and I had decided to stop at a pub called Mug Shots for a drink and a bite to eat before we went back to the hotel. The first thing I noticed when walking into this place is the neatly airbrushed name on the side of the building.  Once inside, one couldn't help but notice the amazing air brush work throughout the building.  Stunned and amazed by all of the artwork, I had asked our waitress, Ashlee, whom the artist was.  The artist's name is Mark and he works there as well.  Mark’s artist name is Magic Mark, also known as Traveling Air.

A little while later Mark and I met for the first time and instantly started talking about the artwork around the room.  I had explained to Mark that I had a passion for drawing and painting as well, and that I was in the process of painting my bike.  He then showed me a photo album of all the work he had done in the past.  Overtaken by Mark's work, I had asked him if he would be interested in repainting my bike and he accepted.  I gave Mark the basic info of what I was looking for in the paint job.  Mark, having respect for my art, had stated that he wouldn’t take away what I had already painted and that he would just work around or add to what I had already done combining both of our arts together!  Shell

The following week,  I dropped off the plastics to Mark and within just three short days, Mark had finished applying his amazing talent and they were ready to go back home to be clear coated by my friend Nathan Gummo.  A few weekends later my brother Mike had helped me put the freshly painted and clear coated plastics back on the bike to bring all this amazing work together.

Since then, I still continue to fine tune the bike.  I sanded and polished both stock rider and passenger foot pegs and brackets along with destined areas on the stock clutch and starter covers for better shine and appeal.  New red, gray, and black Harris grips to match the paint, custom matching marble wind screen painted and cleared by Nathan Gummo, replaced stock bar ends with Gold Dollars to match front forks and certain painted areas on the bike.  I added a custom aluminum ring around the exhaust tip for a more appealing look on the exhaust pipe, and last but not least I ran and wired an orange L.E.D. lighting kit to match and bring out the custom flame paint job to throw off a real blazing hot look!

In time I will proceed to make changes and modifications that catch the eyes of viewers everywhere!   I would once again like to give a special thanks to RWO Magazine for this opportunity and their support. I would also like to send out a huge and grateful thank you to my parents for their encouragement, Magic Mark AKA Traveling Air for his outstanding talent and art work, Nathan Gummo for his outstanding glassy looking clear-coat job, Michael Shreckengast for his helpful advice and help, and everyone else that has inspired me to continue and still continues to give their ideas and opinions on future changes!

Caution: Horseshoes Ahead

A few weeks ago I traveled with some friends to Lewistown, PA to participate in the Cruise for a Cure ride hosted by the Touring Friends Motorcycle Club.  The event was aimed to raise funds for the local Relay For Life Team that supports cancer research.  For anyone who does not know, the Touring Friends M.C. are a group of people from the Lewistown area who love to ride and are very into supporting local charities. Their leader, Skip, knows how to have a good time and help the community while doing so.  Be sure to watch for their events here on Ride Wide Open, along with pictures, and help them out when you can. You can also get more info on Touring Friends M.C. by looking them up in the RWO Club Directory.  Now onto to the ride......Touring Friends MC

The weather for this ride could not have been better.  Nice sunny skies,  temperatures that were far from too hot or too cold, but just right, and perfect for a day of riding.  The ride began at the Brooklyn Fire Company, in Lewistown, PA.  Scattered throughout the parking lot were about 50 bikes and many folks that were ready to ride.  Shortly after arriving,  the bikes and riders were gathered and together the group started out for what was thought to be a calm and pleasant 90 mile ride.  Little did we know at this point that calm wouldn't be the case.

The last leg of the ride brought us back into Centre County over the "Seven Mountains" and headed east on Rt.45 in Centre Hall.  So far so good.  My girlfriend and I are situated in the middle of the group when just before Woodward Camp,  I abruptly noticed there was a blank look in my rearview mirror as the rest of the group had disappeared.  You can just imagine the thoughts running through my head... Who went down?  Please don’t be hurt real bad.  How can I help?  All of these thoughts and more ran through my mind as I quickly pulled over and headed back to see what happened.

About two miles back, I come upon my friends along the road all huddled together.  I’m thinking the worst at this time.  Now here is how the "calm"  part of the ride dissipated.  Shortly after looking into the situation,  I find out that a couple of my buddies decided to play Horseshoes along the way. Yeah, Horseshoes.
You see, one of the bikes in the group had ran over a loose horseshoe on the road. The horseshoe then flew back and hit another rider in the ankle, proceeded to strike his primary cover, and lastly flew high in the air and right past another buddies head. The rider who was hit in the ankle, we will just call "Lucky" for the sake of this story.

Cruise for a Cure            Lucky, so to speak, managed to get his bike off to the side of the road without dumping it, then quickly jumped off and fell down in the field screaming in pain. When he was told what hit him he said that he just had to have that horseshoe.  A few of the guys gladly agreed to go back and get it, and just as they found it, an Amish buggy had picked it up off the road and continued on with it.  Well, the guys managed to chase the buggy down and explained they needed to have this horseshoe. With no objection, they handed over the horseshoe and rode back to the site and presented the horseshoe to Lucky.  I know I’m making light of this, but that’s just because Lucky really ended up not being hurt bad.  He was able to continue on the ride although he was in quite a bit of pain. However, I must add some insult to injury here as our friend Lucky had another minor incident.  As Lucky tried to point out some road kill on the road to the riders following him, he didn't manage to pick his foot up in time and actually kicked it... yes I said KICKED IT, which caused him even more pain!

What should you take away from this story?  First of all, always be aware of the road your riding on and anything, and I mean anything, that might be on it. This could have turned out very bad, but luckily for our friend, he was lucky. All in all, it was a great day, with a good meal at the Brooklyn Fire Co. waiting for us when we got back.  I would like to thank Skip and his crew, the Touring Friends M.C., for a good time.  Lastly, it was also decided that no Horseshoe games are permitted on future rides.

Be Safe,  Scooter

RWO Rock It                Hello everyone!  There's been a short break in RWO Rock It, but I will be out in full force beginning in July to bring you interviews with bands, pics and more.  This section of the magazine is to help expose and promote bands who are trying to make it in music world and some just for fun.

Let’s begin with Rides and Rods, an event that benefited the Fisher House Foundation.  I hope most of our readers had the opportunity to come and check out the show and bands.  This event was hosted by The American Guardians MC and took place at the Centre Hall American Legion.  The Coordinator of this event was our very own Crystal G., owner of  Ride Wide Open the Magazine.  I was excited when she asked the assistance of Bands Music and everything else in between… to help with coordinating the bands, which is me, Your RWO Rock It reporter.  The event was a huge success and needless to say you if you didn’t make it out, you sure did miss out on a good time and a chance to hear true talent.

The Band line-up for Rides & Rods was Big Daddy Bangers from Clinton County, Shiver from Centre County, Nite Kast from Blair County, and G211 from Centre County.  Due to Mother Nature, G211  was unable to perform but we will get them next time!  What a line-up! Where else in this area would you be able to see and rock out with multiple bands from 3 different counties?  Special thanks to GP Audio for providing the sound and stage and Party Player Entertainment for providing us with DJ and music between sets.  They were all absolutely awesome.  I’m not going to go into a lot of detail about the bands because I will be conducting personal interviews with them and sneak into a few of their bands practices to see what goes on behind the scenes.  Until that time I will however provide you with some pics of the bands for your viewing pleasure. You can check out the full story in this issue under the Event Spotlight Section.

Calling all drummers!  I received an email recently from Custom Drum Sticks stating they are now  offering auto delivery on your customized sticks.  You choose your own measurements to make the perfect stick for you.  How awesome is that?  Grab a few extras so you have them to throw out into the crowd. Website: http://www.customdrumsticks.biz

I would also like to spread the word about the Lock Haven Summer Concert Series.  Each Sunday, local area bands perform for free on the floating stage.  Last time I attended one of these they passed a container around for donations to help keep this going.  It’s an awesome time especially if you like water and music.  The stage is attached to the dock and all the local boaters line up behind them tooting their horns and just having a blast party to the music, and there is plenty of seating on the bleachers in the front of the band too.  It usually begins around 6pm and goes to approximately 6:30-9pm, weather permitting.  It always gives me a tranquil feeling with the combination of water, boats, and live music.  And, you can always catch the sunset too!  So if you’re looking for something to do, check out the website, http://www.lockhavencity.org, and see who is playing and head on down.  It’s a great way to spend a Sunday evening.

For the bands who are serious about making it in the music world and want a chance of getting some great exposure;  Kiss is touring and is conducting a search for an opening band in the areas they are playing.  How does it work?  Simply have your fans vote for you on the website, http://www.kissonline.com/index/home/.  The bands with the most votes will be considered.  Kiss will review them and make a decision. Update: It may be too late to add your band to this contest but log on to see which band had the most votes for the area closest to you!

Attention: Brett Michael fans!  Guess what?  Brett Michaels is scheduled to play at the Clearfield County Fair this Summer on Friday, Aug 6th.  That hot bod and long hair with all his moves is coming to entertain you.  There was a suspension on ticket sales but as of today they are on sale.  I just visited the site to get that confirmation. I also discovered that ZZ Top will be performing as well, on Wednesday, Aug 4th.  You can find out more information and order tickets online at the Clearfield County Fair Website for further information at http://www.clearfieldcountyfair.com/ticket-sales/

As always with any concerts or events you should always check with the vendor or establishment  to confirm there are no cancellations or changes. RWO (Ride Wide Open) or their affiliates do not take any responsibility or liability on information passed onto you concerning concerts or events.

Rockview MC Pride Ride

Rockview MC Pride Ride

May 2, 2010 was a rainy day.  A very wet and rain soaked day.  Fortunately, that did not stop many riders from partaking in this year's Rockview PRIDE MC Ride held at Brown's Hill Tavern in Lamar, PA.  For some, even though they chose not to ride in the drenching downpour, they came in their cages, determined to show their support of this ride.  Myself and my husband being among those....

The food served up by Brown's Hill Tavern was plentiful!  If anyone left there hungry, it would be their own fault.  Chicken, baked beans, rolls and more filled the menu.  After your bellies were full, all could venture inside to listen to the sounds of tunes of Big Daddy Bangers.  This is my first time hearing this band and I have to say, I was not disappointed.  They played all the right music that my ears, and many others, just wanted to hear!  Pride Ride

All in all, it was a good day, with good people, good food and good music!  If you missed it this year, be sure to come out and support Rockview Pride MC next year!

Be sure to check out the photos of this event and many more in the RWO Rides and Runs Photo Gallery!

The History of A.B.A.T.E. - Part 3

By   Thu, Jul 01, 2010

The History of A.B.A.T.E.

In 1977, the first A.B.A.T.E. of PA was founded. It had its roots in an earlier group called Motorcyclists Against Unfair Legislation (MAUL). In 1976, MAUL held helmet protest rallies at the state capital in July and September.  At the time, MAUL's president was Scott Hart of Reading, and Scott Halverson of Philadelphia was listed as an organizer.

From 1977 to 1983, A.B.A.T.E. of PA's activities are uncertain. What we do know is that in 1983, A.B.A.T.E. of PA declared bankruptcy and was replaced by a new organization, A.B.A.T.E. of PA (note the periods after the letters which differentiates the two organizations).

WMRCP - Women Motorcycle Riders of Central PA

By   Thu, Jul 01, 2010

WMRCP - Women Motorcycle Riders of Central PA

Women Motorcycle Riders of Central PA (WMRCP) was founded in Oct 2008.  The group was established as a way to network with other female motorcycle riders and consists of a wide variety of ladies.  We have professional riders who race and others that perform stunts, although the majority of our members are productive professionals in various fields in our community.  Most of our members are just everyday people who share the joy of riding.  It doesn't matter how old you are; our members range in age from 18 to 60ish.
It's amazing on how the number of female riders continues to grow throughout the years.  Whenever I started to ride 13 years ago there were only a handful.  I was always outnumbered by the boys.  Don't get me wrong boys are great, but sometime you just need some girl time.  That was the main reason for starting WMRCP.  Currently we have around 150 members, and we do have a few male members too;  I didn't want to be accused of being sexist.  I did warn a few men that if they wanted to join they would have to do a bikini bike wash in a Speedo.  I'm not sure why guys would want to join a girls riding group though.WMRCP
It doesn't matter what kind of bike that you ride. Whether it's a sport bike or a cruiser a Honda or Harley it doesn't matter. Our members' riding skills vary. We have brand new riders, along with novice to intermediate and advanced.  We want to mentor new riders to help them build their confidence along with safe road skills.
Women Motorcycle Riders of Central PA has and will continue to give back to the community through various events and benefits. Last year we were able to help the Centre County Women's Resource Center
, helped to raise money for an injured biker, and we helped raise money to pay for a funeral.  This year we are doing a benefit for our local SPCA on July 24. Our group tries to promote other groups benefits and events also.  If WMRCPyou are interested in joining WMRCP or know of someone who would like to join please contact us. If you have any questions feel free to contact us on Facebook or email Sherry at sweetharleychick@comcast.net.
